Exploring Hidden Gems - Part 1 - Sabelli Frisch Wines

Updated: Feb 19

I first heard about Sabelli Frisch wines on Martine's wines website. I was looking for a wine bottle and google recommended Martine's website.

There it was under their Sur Le Zinc page. A small paragraph that talked about how he uses rare/under appreciated grapes and and makes wine in an old world way, here in California.

I was intrigued so went to Sabelli's website to see what he has to offer. Website is simple and easy to navigate and very um non-BS style. You are on the website to learn about and buy his wines and that's what you do. I placed my very first order in November of 2022 and I can say I was hooked.

My first order was 2 bottles - 2020 Hernan (Mission) and 2020 Milk Fed (Zweigelt which is an Austrian cross between Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent)

I received the order swiftly and could not waste to taste the grapes that I had never tasted before.

Tasting Notes

2020 Hernan

Deep red fruit notes, juicy but at the same time slightly bold. Something you can not only pair food with but also sip it on its own. The wine is easy drinking.

2020 Milk Fed

Slightly tartness and spiciness in the wine, but very crisp to drink. If somebody would serve this along with a French wine, I may not be able to tell the difference.

I devoured the wines quickly and I was ready to try different grapes/wines. I placed my 2nd order within 10 days and this time got the 4 bottles.

2021 Mariedam - A white Zinfandel, as crazy as it sounds, being in California, I have never tasted a Zinfandel Rose before. The curiosity got the best out of me so I ordered 2 bottles. Blood Orange peel, Crisp, refreshing wine. My husband and I shared a bottle and I just loved it. I got spooked when I heard that its completely sold out, so not touching the 2nd bottle at all :D.

2021 Bund - A Riesling - Cellared and Not Tasted

2020 Glogg - Cellared and Not Tasted

And you can see where it's headed. After the first 2 dates, I knew that I am ready for the commitment.

Since then, I have enjoyed numerous wines from Sabelli-Frisch. I recently got my hands on Lanterna, a much awaited for me.

Lanterna - Made with one of the rarest grape in California, Flame Tokay. I can't wait to taste this wine, just waiting for temperatures to hit around 80 F to enjoy this. Tasting notes to follow
