Portuguese Wines

The first time I tasted a Portuguese wine was actually in Portugal. My husband and I took a trip to Portugal in Nov. 2021. We were nervous, our luggage was filled with masks, sanitizers, disinfectant wipes but our hearts were full of excitement.

Our very first Portuguese Red wine experience was at an Asian restaurant called Boa Bao. We waited for an hour to get an outdoor table and while waiting decided to get a bottle of wine.

Our very first bottle. I still remember, the wine was fresh, fruit forward, easy drinking and was

actually very delicious.

My husband and I are usually wine drinkers and we were surprised that we had never tried a Portuguese table Wine. Before going to Portugal, all I had heard about was Port and some information on Madeira but no-one talked about the delicious indigenous grapes that Portugal grows and the wines it makes.

Not just that, the wine cost 1/4 of a good quality Napa Cabernet with amazing quality.

We drank many such delicious wines in our trip through out. It was our first road trip together in Europe so we really went from North to South of Portugal. Started our trip from Lisbooa - Obidos - Porto - Aviero - Fatima - Sintra - Comporta - Lagos and each city was so beautiful, we were mesmerized. Some of the wines we drank were:

  1. CARM Wines

  2. House White or Red wines - So amazing, you don’t want to pass

  3. Azul Portugal

  4. Esteva

  5. Evel

  6. Palato

  7. Trinca Bolotas

  8. Altano

  9. Monsaraz

  10. Vallado

  11. Macanita

  12. Esporao

  13. Monte Velho

  14. Vinha Grande Douro

We also had a few Syrah blends which I don't recall because we drank a lot but you get the gist. When we came back to California, I was surprised that only Port wine is available in major stores. A lot of these great red/white table Portuguese wines are not.

We loved Portugal so much, we visited again but only to visit the famous wine region, Douro Valley, I will soon write a post and blog about it so you know how awesome it was..

With that, I am so proud to announce that I will be launching a mission of my own to talk more about Portuguese wines. Very soon, you will series of posts on my blog and on my instagram..
